It still feels strange to me that the USA is celebrating the memory of her fallen heroes this weekend instead of next weekend. I associate the Memorial Day holiday with the traditional May 30th date as many still do. Congress officially fixed the date of the celebration to the last Monday in May–whatever date it falls on–in 1971.
Today, we honor those who paid the ultimate price in wars past and present. Originally, it began as “Decoration Day” a time we breathed a national sigh of relief and sorrow after the social suicidal conflict that took over 600, 000 lives of our own citizenry to finally determine whether we would be one nation or two (The Civil? War).
No, we did not settle all the issues then because some left-over issues remain to this day. May we never have to tear ourselves apart to settle anything among ourselves ever again and may our lesson be a lesson the whole world learns.
Here is a wish that someday the ways of war will become unknown on earth.
May every soul be at peace today,
